One of the
greatest barriers for most overweight people to overcome
when starting out on their weight loss journey is the
need to slay the ravening beast called- "HUNGER"
However
there are different levels of hunger, and whilst we certainly
feel hungry if we do not have enough food for the body to
function (and we will then experience real and profound hunger)
we also feel hunger as a result of
changes in insulin levels which is effectively a type of
"hormonal" hunger. When our blood sugar levels (i.e. insulin
production) spike and fall, we crave more sweets and
carbohydrates. It is this hormonal hunger
which sabotages most people's
diets.
Therefore in the early stages of a weight
loss program it can be really helpful to be able to
utilise some form of appetite suppressant that will help
to reduce the tendency to indulge in "snacking" due to
hormonal hunger. You need to continue to eat meals when
you have real hunger, but you want to eliminate all the
snacking due to hormonal hunger and stop the cravings for
snacks when you do not need to eat
food.
The problem is that up until recently most
appetite suppressants have only been available on
prescription or by buying unregulated pharmaceutical
supplements such as ephedra. Now many people who took
ephedra supplements lost weight, but there have been
suggestions that taking ephedra could lead to serious
health risks like strokes and heart
attacks.
Now I personally have to confess a dark
secret at this point. Whilst, I have now been on Tom
Venuto's "Burn the Fat, Feed The Muscle" program for well
over two years and I no longer have a problem with this,
in the beginning I had a real battle with the "Hunger
Monster"! At this time I was quite unaware of Hoodia or
its properties and I resorted to asking my GP for a
prescription appetite suppressant called Sibutramine
(Also known as Meridia in the US and Reductil in the UK).
Whilst this worked OK and helped me get over the worst of
the initial hunger pangs and cravings I dropped it as
soon as I could, as there are a number of uncertaintaies
regarding possible side effects from long term use. If I
had been aware of a natural-plant based-alternative at
that time I would certainly have gone that route
instead
Now the good news is that products
containing Hoodia Gordonii should be
entirely natural. It is not a drug, although
pharmaceutical companies are trying to isolate the
appetite-suppressing molecule, P57, to create a patented
diet drug in the future, this has not so far been possible
and therefore the only way to get the appetite suppressant
benefits of Hoodia is to take supplements made directly from
the actual plant material.
Now what exactly is Hoodia
Gordonii and how does it work?-
Well, Hoodia, is a plant that,
while it looks like a cactus, is actually a "succulent" that
grows in the high deserts of the Kalahari Desert region of
South Africa (see the picture at the top of the page of a plant
growing in its native dessert). The San people of the Kalahari
-- a tribe of hunter-gatherers with a 27,000-year-old culture
and history in using native plants for medicinal purposes --
have been using the hoodia plant for centuries to help ward off
pain, hunger and thirst when the Bushmen made long trips in the
desert.
There is a part of your
brain, the hypothalamus and within that mid-brain there are
nerve cells that sense glucose sugar. When you eat, blood sugar
goes up because of the food, these cells start firing and now
you feel full. What Hoodia seems to contain is a molecule that
is about 10,000 times as active as glucose. It goes to
the mid-brain and actually makes those nerve cells fire as if
you were full. But you have not eaten. Nor do you want
to. This
molecule has been code named P57. So basically, Hoodia fools
the brain into thinking it's full when it's not. So, your brain
sends the signal that it is full and this cuts your urge to
snack on unhealthy food.
Now I have not personally tried Hoodia, as
I no longer need to, having adjusted my appetite and
eating habbits in line withTom's BFFM
program, however I know several people who have
tried it and benefited from it. I am sure that if I
were starting out on my weight loss journey today, I
would definitely give it a
try.

Hoodia products at Hoodia Diet Review (and try these
out for yourself if you
wish).
Note: If you decide to try Hoodia
make sure the company that you get it
from
only use 100% pure South African Hoodia and
can show the certificates to prove it. It appears that
there are two certified documents required to prove the
authenticity of pure South African Hoodia, which are a
C.I.T.E.S Certificate and/or an Analytical
Report.
